United by Music
United by Music gives musically talented people with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to perform for large audiences. The foundation's goal is to promote the inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities and improve their quality of life. United by Music has several bands featuring diverse vocalists. The artists enthusiastically perform a variety of songs in blues and swing styles, combined with boogie-woogie.
Since 2005, United by Music has grown into an international success with foundations in the Netherlands, Norway, Romania, and the United States. The dream is to introduce United by Music to every community, enabling people with disabilities worldwide to showcase their talents. The platform offers artists a unique opportunity to be treated as equals. In 2013, scientific research even demonstrated that United by Music has a positive effect on the artists, as they feel less lonely and experience more social support.
"Music is what unites us and makes us all the same"
- Candye Kane
History
In 2005, Joris van Wijngaarden, financial director of the healthcare organization Carante Groep, organized a staff party called the "South West Festival." Several bands performed at the party, including American blues diva Candye Kane. Before her performance, she decided to check out another band that happened to be made up of people with intellectual disabilities. She immediately invited two of the singers to perform with her that evening: Lady Angel and JA Grace. Amazingly, they sang brilliantly, and thus the idea for United by Music was born.
The search for musical talent began. Auditions were held throughout the Netherlands, with a large number of people showcasing their musical talent. In 2006, the first tour took place: eleven shows in two weeks. Each show featured artists with intellectual disabilities performing accompanied by a professional American band. The show concluded with a swinging performance by the blues diva herself. United by Music brought the unifying concept of music to the Netherlands.
Since then, the United by Music concept has evolved considerably. The foundation is comparable to an artist and events agency that manages a large number of artists. The artists perform almost independently and can be considered professional musicians. The All Star Band has performed over 300 times for over 100,000 spectators, culminating in a performance in July 2012 at the Safeway Waterfront Blues Festival in Portland, the second-largest festival in America. There, they performed on the main stage for over 15,000 people.
The dream is to introduce United by Music to every community and establish various foundations worldwide. Since May 2012, United by Music has had an independent foundation in North America led by Barbara Hammerman, and in 2015, a new organization was launched in Norway led by Helena Wilberg. In 2018, United by Music launched a new organization in Romania. And hopefully in even more countries in the future...
